  • 10 medium apples (a mix of sweet and tart varieties like McIntosh, Fuji, and Granny Smith) Use clean, bruised apples; avoid moldy ones.
  • 1 cup water To prevent sticking in the pot.
  • to taste tablespoons sugar Only if needed, based on apple sweetness.
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon Optional for flavor enhancement.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Optional for preserving tartness and flavor.
For canning
  • 10 jars canning jars Ensure jars are hot before filling.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Wash the apples and slice or quarter them. Peeling is optional.
  2. Place the apple slices in a large pot with 1 cup of water.
Cooking
  1. Bring the pot to a simmer and stir occasionally until the apples are soft.
  2. Mash the softened apples with a potato masher or use an immersion blender for a smoother texture.
  3. Taste the applesauce and adjust sweetness with sugar, if desired, and add cinnamon or lemon juice for flavor.
Canning
  1. Prepare your canning jars by running them through the dishwasher or boiling them.
  2. Ladle the applesauce into warm jars, leaving about an inch of space at the top.
  3. Wipe the rims clean, screw on the lids, and process in a boiling water bath for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Remove jars from the water and let cool, listening for the pop that signifies they are sealed.

Notes

Experiment with flavors by adding spices such as nutmeg or clove. Applesauce can be enjoyed warm, chilled, or with various dishes.
