For the Crisp Topping
  • 1 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour Check for gluten-free label.
  • 1 cup gluten-free oats Confirm labeling.
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar Preferably packed.
  • 1/2 cup butter, cold and cubed Or use coconut oil for dairy-free version.
  • 1 pinch salt Enhances flavor.
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts Optional.

Method
 

Prepare the Apple Filling
  1. Peel and core the apples, then slice them in thicker pieces.
  2. In a bowl, toss the apple slices with lemon juice, white sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well coated.
  3. Transfer the apple mixture into a baking pan.
Prepare the Crisp Topping
  1. In a separate bowl, mix together the gluten-free flour, oats, and brown sugar.
  2. Add the cold, cubed butter and work the mixture with your hands until it resembles wet sand with lumps.
  3. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple filling.
Bake
  1. Bake in a preheated oven until golden and bubbly, about 30 minutes.
